Luxury interiors: ideas for your home
Luxury means something different in every home. For one person it is a classical interior with ornament and an imposing chandelier; for another, a modern room with no fuss at all. The luxury interiors below all come from our own projects: take from them whatever fits the way you want to live.
A glass fireplace rarely fails
Inspiration
Whatever style you choose, a glass fireplace nearly always works; it brings a warm kind of luxury on its own. For one project we separated the large open kitchen from the sitting room with a see-through fireplace and a steel door. You keep contact between the two rooms while sitting in the quiet of one, and the play of the flames shows on both sides.
One wall that draws the eye
A single striking wall can carry a whole room. For the interior design of a new-build villa we clad the wall in three-dimensional bog oak panels by Wonderwall Studios. The colour of the bog oak brings a deep warmth into the interior, and the natural surface set in symmetrical frames gives both the living room and the kitchen their character.
Choose one colour theme
The busier an interior looks, the less luxury it tends to radiate. So choose a single colour theme and vary the tones within it; the room reads calm at once. If you find yourself missing colour, bring it in through accessories. For a detached villa we combined a range of greys with a brown accent colour, and that alone gave the interior its unity and rest.
Use an unexpected material
An unusual material in the right place gives a room a pleasing tension. In a detached house we mounted a framed panel of sand-coloured artificial leather on the wall. It catches the eye and it asks to be touched, and the sand tone gives the leather a quietly luxurious look.

Dark colours and a cinewall
Is the living room above all the place where you settle in for a film with the family, a drink and something to eat within reach? Few people think of papering or painting the walls dark, yet dark colours make a living room feel enclosed and chic. For one client we designed a cinewall that had to give the room exactly that feeling. We chose dark tones throughout; the cinewall fills the entire wall and runs on into two steel doors.
Art in the living room
Art gives an interior a certain finish. If you are buying, keep it to one or two works that stand out yet remain part of the whole, and make sure their colours sit well in the room. In one of our projects we hung two paintings on either side of the opening to the bay window: present, but part of the composition.
Give the light a plan
The most undervalued part of furnishing a living room is usually the lighting plan. How a room is lit decides its atmosphere, and a few well placed spots add light and depth exactly where the room needs them.

A luxurious living room asks for sofas, chairs, tables and lamps of the same standard as the room itself. At Studio Reinder Veenstra we are often happiest with bespoke furniture, but the better furniture houses reward a visit. Among our favourites:
