Inspiration

It starts with material and colour

Think first about colour and material. Earth tones suit a bedroom well: natural colours that hold warmth. Combine them with greys, cream and sand and the room settles into a calm that does not date, so the bedroom pleases for years rather than seasons.

Then the materials themselves. Wallpaper is the obvious route, but a wall of leather is at least as striking, and so is warm wood such as walnut or oak. Set these against velvet, wool, glass, natural stone, marble or brass, and watch the balance between gloss and matt: get that right and the room quietly reads as opulent.

Inspiration

Space to unwind

If the bedroom is generously sized, a whirlpool bath is worth considering; it turns the room into a place to unwind as well as sleep. Set it on a platform against the wall: the platform conceals the drainage, and the bath becomes the natural centrepiece of the room. Keep candles and a diffuser within reach and the spa feeling follows of its own accord.

Window treatments

Curtains and other window treatments carry a good part of the style. Choose full-length curtains in a fabric with some weight, such as velvet, or wooden blinds for a warmer effect. For extra comfort, automate them with home automation: one press from your bed opens or closes them.

Accessories finish the room

With the furniture in place, the accessories do the fine tuning. A well chosen bedroom lamp gives the room its tone as much as its light: hang a tasteful pendant, and put a practical reading lamp on each nightstand. Keep the symmetry, with a nightstand and a lamp on either side of the bed.

Art or a television

If you like a film in bed, the television needs solving: practical, but rarely handsome. You can conceal it behind a sliding panel, or choose one of the models that displays a painting when switched off. Art is the other route: chic bedrooms often carry a single work on the wall, modern or classical, chosen to fit the character of the room.
