Six interior tips from the designer

A modern interior slides easily into white and black. Yet colour is exactly what gives a modern home its warmth. In our designs we lean on earthy tints, browns and beiges: colours that feel warm and stay chic. Natural, warm colours also connect the room to the outdoors, so the green in the garden stands out more. We usually work from one colour theme, with accents to bring extra warmth where the room needs it: a bronze wall, say, or brown cabinetry.

Use cushions well

Cushions bring warmth into a room. Keep them within one colour group, which gives unity and calm, and vary the shape, the material and the texture within that group. A calm interior still needs contrast to stay interesting, so a few colourful accessories can earn their place.

Accessories should support the design, never carry it. We shape our interiors so that they stand up even with every accessory removed; once the design of the house itself is right, the accessories are there to make it yours. A good lighting plan belongs in the same category, because it brings calm and unity to the whole. Styling is part of our work at the studio: alongside the complete interior design for a new house or a renovation, we select and style the accessories as well.
