Handing over the interior of your villa: what to look out for
Furnishing a villa can be a lot to take on. A large floor area usually asks for a different approach than a house of average size, and that makes it worth bringing in someone with experience at this scale. At Studio Reinder Veenstra we are glad to show what that looks like. Below are the points we would check first, and a villa project from our own portfolio.

Choose a designer whose style matches yours
Having a villa furnished is not a small step. It is your house, and the interior has to make you feel at home in it. So choose an interior designer whose work leans towards the style you have in mind. When you are choosing one, a few things are worth doing:

- Find out whether you and the designer get on
- Ask how the designer works

In a new-build villa, the order of work comes first
In a new build it always matters to keep to the right order of furnishing. Before you start, heat the house to drive the moisture out of the structure. Once the kitchen, bathroom and toilet are installed, it is time for the painting and the floors. Work from the designs and the floor plan of the interior designer: it prevents the wrong colours ending up together, which would cost the interior its sense of luxury.

Do not forget the lighting plan
In a villa, attention usually goes to the furniture, the cabinets, the paint and the floors. Yet those elements only come into their own once there is a professional lighting plan. Light largely sets the mood in a room and decides which pieces stand out. A lighting plan falls into three categories:
- Base lighting
- Functional light
- Accent lighting
Base lighting lets you see the whole room properly; it spreads across the space. Functional light adds brightness where tasks happen, so you have enough of it to read or cook by. Accent lighting puts the emphasis on particular things in the room: a wall that should draw the eye, or a piece of art that may stand out. A good interior designer therefore builds a full lighting plan into the design.

The design process of a villa interior
If you hand over the interior, you will want to know how an interior designer works towards a final design. When Studio Reinder Veenstra takes on the interior design, we always begin with a conversation, because we first want a precise picture of your wishes. We discuss the rhythm of your days and how you personally want to live. From that we make sketch designs and moodboards, which show you how we would furnish your house. There is room for feedback, and after it we draw up the final interior design. Along the way we also show you the possibilities in materials and colours, and you receive a 3D visualisation, so the design comes to life.
You can also go a step further and have a complete interior design made. Then the whole furnishing of the villa is out of your hands and we help you with the full build, from beginning to end. We work with a fixed circle of partners and brands, among them Limited Edition, Arte and Molteni &C. We furnish the house in full and see to it that every piece of furniture stands where it belongs. Interior design for a new-build villa
The brief for this commission was a warm interior with a character of its own. The owners of the new-build villa wanted complete help, because their days are full enough as it is. The kitchen is an important place for this family, and they wanted it to merge with the rest of the interior.
So we applied bog oak 3D wall panels symmetrically in the kitchen and the seating area, which ties the two spaces together. The colour of the bog oak gives the living room a warm and natural look. We also used bespoke joinery to create calm and unity: the furniture recedes into the architecture of the house.
